1.A New York, dans les années 20, la jeune Agatha Howard rend visite au Dr. Juan Muñoz, ami de son père, avec lequel il avait tenté jadis de trouver un moyen de repousser la mort. Muñoz lui réserve un accueil cordial, mais Agatha remarque qu’un froid inhabituel règne chez son hôte, son appartement étant littéralement réfrigéré.
2.L’usurier Sharsted se rend chez M. Gingold, afin de réclamer le recouvrement d’une créance. Tout en lui reprochant son avidité prédatrice, Gingold lui fait visiter sa belle collection d’œuvres d’art, dont une étrange caméra victorienne. Mais rien ne semble distraire Sharsted de sa rapacité, avant qu’il ne se trouve confronté à une capacité inattendue de la caméra.
